How to Overcome the Language Barrier

Many couples on our site do not share a native language at the start. The good news: the language barrier is much smaller than it seems, and it often brings couples closer.

Keep your English simple

Write short, clear sentences and avoid slang and idioms. "I had a great day at work" is easier to understand than "It was a blast today". Simple language is not boring — it is respectful.

Use translation tools wisely

Translator apps are very helpful, but they make mistakes. If a phrase sounds strange, ask what she meant instead of guessing. Laughing together at funny translation mistakes is part of the fun.

Learn a few words in her language

"Good morning", "How are you?", "Thank you", "I miss you" — a few words in Ukrainian or Russian show effort and touch the heart. She will notice.

Use video

On video, gestures, smiles and tone of voice say a lot. Many couples find they understand each other much better on a call than in writing.

Be patient

Misunderstandings will happen. Give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask again when something is unclear. Over time you will develop your own shared language — many couples say this is one of the sweetest parts of their story.
